Installing a motion activated security camera is a great way to deter burglars from targeting your home, so ensure the camera is in plain sight for all to see. The advantage this type of camera has over other security cameras is that it only records when the motion detector picks up movement in it’s field of range, saving you lots of storage space on your disks.
Standard security cameras were only used in businesses and stores up until recently, as home owners could not manage the storage required for continuous recording. Can you imagine how many video tapes or how much disk space would be required to store just one days recording? Now with motion activated security camera technology requiring only a fraction of that storage space, householders can get high level security monitoring that is easy to manage and affordable.
The break through that came with motion activated cameras is that the device records only when motion is detection within a set range. And because the device only records when triggered, meaning less storage space is required, manufactures have been able to increase the quality of the recorded footage. This makes it easier to identify lurkers, vandals and burglars, providing valuable information for law enforcement.
Obviously there is a cost saving here over the long-term as you will have to buy less storage disks and won’t have to continuously worry about disk space running out when you need it most.
Most modern motion activated security cameras include motion tracking, meaning it will follow a persons movement, ensuring as much information is being recorded about their activities as possible. These security devices have an excellent range of movement with tilting and panning tracking action. Many of these cameras are IP security cameras that used software to manage the camera’s controls.See An Example Of

A motion activated security camera is a wise investment for any householder who feels they need that little extra peace of mind.
Hidden Cameras
There’s a little bit of James Bond in all of us, and using spy equipment brings it out. If you have ever wondered what went on at home or in your office while you are out, you can install a hidden motion activated security camera.
These cameras will automatically record when they detect movement, but to the person in the room they will seem like any household object. Hidden cameras come in the form of alarm clocks, air fresheners, and as a host of other household items that will quietly record what is going on around them. The great thing is they are simple to install and seldom require mains electric, instead running off a few small batteries. Most will have a few hundred MBs of memory, and you can expand that by adding your SD card in a memory slot.
Check out the video example of one of these devices in action:
Benefits Of Motion Detection Cameras:
- Camera only activates when movement is detected within the area you wish to monitor. This saves recording space on VHS/DVD and SD memory cards.
- Motion activated cameras act as a visual deterrent to burglars.
- Image quality – thanks to advancement in technology and high memory SD cards, many new motion cameras save images at high-quality, usually from 640×480 px and higer in color. This means the footage they record can be used to clearly identify burglars for legal proceedings.
- Wireless motion sensor cameras are easy to install/set-up. Some need only to be put into position and switched on.
- Hidden motion sensor cameras can be placed pretty much anywhere around the home without intruders even ‘seeing’ them. They come in a variety of designs from door bells to alarm clocks and many more.
Example of A Wireless Mini Night Vision Motion Activated Camera
There are countless different versions of motion cameras in the market. One example from SpygearGadgets is noteworthy because it is one of the smallest cameras on the market, that measures just over 2 inches. And because it’s wireless battery operated it can pretty much go anywhere; placed in a window, hidden on a bookshelf, anywhere.
These little cameras are impressive. Typical of modern cameras it records high-quality captured images to a SD card, up to 32GB. It couldn’t be easier to use, just point it where you want too monitor and push the button to switch it on.
(To be honest this is a little disappointing, when I get spy gear I like to think I need some skill to use it, but this type of technology is so simple to use, well anyone can do it!)
What is not disappointing is the heat motion sensor. This sensor picks up body-heat, which means there will be less false starts when detecting motion, and it’s also got night vision which means it’ll work in absolute darkness. Like I said, very impressive for a little 2 inch piece of kit.
One drawback for these little wireless motion cameras that record to SD cards:
The intruder might just swipe it if he’s doing a grab-all, or if he realizes that it is a security device. So camera and SD card are both gone with the wind. Yikes! The solution is to make sure it’s well hidden, or have a couple dotted around the place, all equally well hidden.
That said, this is not just a device for recording burglars. Use it as a nanny cam to monitor your babysitter, keep an eye on staff and so on. Mark your SD card so if it is replaced you will know something is up.
