A Complete Guide To Choosing The Right Safe For Your Home

Get the Right Safe For the Job

If you decide you need a safe in your home you’ll want to get a high-quality one. Ideally you’re better off getting a safe that is wall mounted, so the bad guys can’t just walk away with it. Of course this will depend on what you need the safe for. Personally, I don’t have a safe in my home but it’s a purchase that does cross my mind from time to time. So, this page contains the research I’ve done, looking into the different types of safes and different reasons for getting one. Hope you find it useful.

First lets start with a round up of why you might want or need a home safe starting with the obvious.

secure-medicineMedicine

You want to secure your medicine so your kids or grandchildren don’t get their grubby little paws on your prescription. Joking aside, this is a pretty good reason for getting a safe if you need to keep pills by your bed instead of locked up in a secure medicine cabinet, and there are children in the house. The other benefit is to safeguard your medicine against being stolen by intruders.

Gun Safe

A popular gun safe is the StackOn PDS-500 Drawer Safe with electronic lock. This safe can be mounted into the bottom of a drawer, making it very difficult for an intruder to simply walk way with it. If they did somehow manage to walk away with the gun vault they’re unlikely to ever gain access to a safe like this. It has concealed hinges so the crooks won’t know where to start if the they actually had anything powerful enough to prise open this bad-boy. Not only that, the Stack-On PDS 500 features two live action solid steal locking bolts and plate steel doors that keep that sucker tighter than a ducks ass.

Like with most home safes, you can put a variety of items in this safe, but it really is good for hand guns and ammo due to it’s size and the fact you can mount it into a drawer as mentioned. It’s got an electronic keypad that you can easily program your code into and if you forget the code there is an override key you can use to unlock it. Obviously keep this key in a secure place and I don’t mean inside the safe! Anyhow, I like the look of this gun safe and it’s inexpensive too.

Store Important Documents And Cash

If you have large sums of money and personal documents at your home, it makes sense to store them somewhere safe. And where better than an actual safe? But not just any safe, you’ll probably want to ensure it’s a fire resistant safe!

Fire-Resistant Safes

StackOn Fire Resistant Water Proof SafeA fire-resistant safe is designed to protect its contents from fire and high temperatures. Most fire resistant safes can withstand high temperatures for anything between 30 minutes up to several hours.

How do you know which level of fire-resistance your save should have? Well imaging your premises went on fire, how long would it take to notify the fire, how long would it take them to arrive and how long before they put out the fire in your home office? If you estimate this at an hour, then the 30 minute fire-resistant safe is not going to cut the mustard. Spend a little more to ensure your contents won’t cook while you’re waiting for the fire to be quenched.

If you don’t want to spend all of your family inheritance on a fire safe, but want to ensure it’s more resistant to flames and heat, you can always have it embedded in a concrete floor. This will leave only the door exposed to flames and heat so greatly increases it’s resistance to fire.

But be warned! You need to keep in mind that not all fire-resistant safes are watertight. A fire hose pumping gallons of water under high pressure into our home office could very well flood your safe and destroy the contents within. So you can take one of two actions to combat this issue:

  1. Buy a fire and water resistant safe (more expensive)
  2. Or put all the contents of the safe into watertight plastic containers or dry bags of some sort.

In the USA, the testing of safes and the writing of fire-resistance standards are both performed by Underwriters Laboratories, see a full list here
